Mission and memory

Gyula Horn Virtual Museum was created to pay homage to the memory of the former Prime Minister. We need to emphasize his importance, since Gyula Horn’s work and leadership set an example both for the domestic and the European Left, and promoted the integration of our country in the Western world before and after the dissolution of the Soviet Empire. This website was created to substantially address this exceptional politician, to whom both Europe and Hungary owe a great deal. It is our belief, however, that the work should not end here.

It is of outmost importance to develop a collective work of scientific demand based on systematic processing out of the huge amount of data and related documentation regarding Gyula Horn’s life. This academic work will not only serve the aim of preserving Gyula Horn’s life achievement, but it would also bring us closer to understanding Hungary’s modern history. The founder and operator of the website, Mihály Táncsics Foundation, shall do its best to publish this work.

The foundation of Horn Gyula Virtuális Múzeum (Gyula Horn Virtual Museum) serves a double purpose. First of all, we would like to pay our tribute to the memory of our former Prime Minister with all the knowledge and picture material that has been collected over the years about this exceptional politician and statesman. Secondly, we are trying to provide information and inquiry opportunity to all the people interested in or studying about the broadly defined period of transition, about the evolution of the political situation or about Gyula Horn himself.

We believe that in a society in which access to information can mean the key to prosperity, this site will contribute to its users’ intellectual enrichment and to the shaping of their world view. Last but not least, we hope that the Virtual Museum is able to provide an interface to all the citizens and organisations who consider it important to preserve the memory of Gyula Horn, as well as the establishment of social democratic values in our country, but they can also use it to share their thoughts and material remains related to our former Prime Minister.

We are therefore looking forward to imprints of personal memory from everybody who was Gyula Horn’s foreign colleague, associate, fellow member of the party, friend, professional partner or had met him at a public forum or town hall meeting and would like to share the recollection of that experience.
